A vacuum cleaner looks like it should cost real money to run — it's loud, it pulls hard, and a corded upright draws around 1,400W, which sounds like space-heater territory. But wattage only tells half the story; the other half is time, and a vacuum's real secret is that it's almost never actually on. Even the biggest cleaning session in the house rarely adds up to more than a few minutes a day of the motor actually spinning.

Multiply that tiny runtime by the price of electricity and you get a number so small it barely shows up on a bill — typically just a few cents per session and a dollar or two for a whole month of regular cleaning.
